Tiny mushrooms!

This weeks pattern is actually 4 but one.

This week I decided to use some battery operated Christmas lights and a jar to make a fairy in a jar light, with a crocheted top.

However, my tiny mushrooms used for the top could be used for so many other things, that I felt necessary to give them their own post. So this week, we have a post for the 3 mushrooms and a post for the fairy jar and lid.

If you wish to support me, then a pdf download copy is avaible on etsy for just £1.50. :)

These mushroom vary in size from small (green) at roughly 1 inch, medium (red) 1.5 inches and big (purple) 2 inches.

What you will need

1.25mm hook

no8 or no 10 crochet thread

  • red,

  • white

  • cream (the stem of all mushrooms)

  • Purple

  • Greeny blue

Sewing needle

Notes

All 3 mushrooms are worked in the round, Create a chain at the beginning of each round (1 for Dc, 2 for Hdc), join each round with a slip stitch into the 1st stitch not the chain!

Each mushroom requires some shaping using some thread and a needle. So it is advised to have some practice in doing this if you have not done it before.

As with all of my patterns,

2Dc = 2Dc in the same stitch

Dc 2= 1 Dc in the next 2 stitches

2Dc 2= 2Dc in the next 2 stitches

s/s= slip stitch

To f/o each mushroom, at the end of the last round, cut the thread leaving a good sized tail, then weave the tail through the front loops of the last round, then pull tight and hide the tail.

weave the tail through the front loops and pull tight. Sew the tail inside the mushroom

Before we make the spots; we need to shape the bottom of the mushroom. I used red sewing thread, but you can use the red crochet thread.

Before you sew, just pinch around the bottom of the red top, so that the round of FLO is in the pinch. Then with the needle and thread, sew down through the top of the mushroom, leaving a tail hanging out, and down through the spaces of round 10, then up to round 6, back down to 10, up to 6 and soon all the way around. Pull the stitches tighter to shape the mushroom. Watch as you you tighten, and only tighten until your happy with the shape.

Next we do the same, but to round 9 and 7. When your finish, go round a stitch in round 9 2 or 3 times and sew back up through the center of the top of the mushroom. Cut the tails.

  16. (2HdcTog, Hdc 2)x8 (24) After round 13 the top of the mushroom goes in on itself, to achieve this, we later sew in a few stitches to give the mushroom its shape.

Lightly stuff the mushroom, and stick you finger inside to make a dip. Roll the mushroom in on itself and pinch, so that you can can see roughly what the top will look like and to judge whether or not to add more stuffing.

  5. 2Hdctog, Hdc 17 (18) To make stuffing easier, we need to shape the head of mushroom around rows 21-23. Push the stem up, so that the last row of purple is has high as rows 7-8, and hold in place with your fingers, add a few stitches (using thread and needle) every few crochet stitches. They need to be from row 17 to 7 or 8, going through the mushroom. You can also add some stitches lower down just below and above the 2 BLO rows, to give a crisper edge.

Sew in the tail. Make 2 big and 2 small white spots, using the pattern from the red mushroom. Sew them on in the same style as the red, so using the purple thread.

  15. Hdc 16 Before we continue, we need to shape the head of the mushroom, just like we did for the purple. Push the stem up, and pinch the edge of the mushroom, so that the BLO row, is at the bottom. We need to sew up through row 12 to row 5, every couple of crochet stitches, around the mushroom; using the same green thread and a needle. Once sewn, stuff the top half oftt the stem, before continuing.
