Lighter holders with strap, free pattern

This is a pattern to make my lighter/ lip-balm holders, with a lanyard that can be removed on one side with a button.

I have included 2 patterns. One is to make a striped bumble bee style holder. Which is a striped holder with wings sewn on top. So this pattern can be used to make either the bumble bee style or a striped holder.

The 2nd pattern is for a plain holder with no colour changes. Again I have included a pattern for a 4 and 5 leaf flower, which can sewn on top.

This pattern assumes that you know how to change colours, however I do have a handy blog post with a tutorial on different ways of switching colours, including my favourite method which I use in this pattern.

I also sell these handy holders made to order in my etsy store Layla's Animals.

You will need

3.5mm hook

yarn needle

sewing needle

sewing thread

1 button

dk wool in the colours of your choosing

tape measure

Notes

This pattern is written using UK terms, I do however have a handy conversion chart over in tips and tutorials.

Each round is started with ch 1 (Dc), ch 2 (Hdc) and so on.

Each round is joined with a s/s into the 1st st not the ch at the beginning.

As with all my patterns

2Dc = 2Dc in the same stitch

Dc 2 = 1 Dc in the next 2 stitches

2Dc 3 = 2 Dc in each of the next 3 stitches

BLO = back loop only

Bumble bee lighter holder (striped holder, and wings)

You will need dk yarn in yellow, black and white.

After the 1st 3 rows, we start to alternate the colours, every row. Because of this, there is no need to cut the yarn. Just leave it attached to your work, and pick it back up when you need to switch colours again. It makes life a lot easier, and quicker.

I have labelled each row with which colour should be used, to get my bumble bee design.

Mr 5

  1. 2Dc 5 (10)

  2. BLO Hdc 10 switch colours on last stitch. From here until the end we switch colours every row, but like we did on round two we switch colour on the last stitch of the round.

  3. Hdc 10 (yellow)

  4. Hdc 10 (Black)

  5. Hdc 10 (yellow)

  6. Hdc 10 (black)

  7. Hdc 10 (yellow)

  8. Hdc 10 (black)

  9. Hdc 10 (yellow) Do not cut the yellow, we will be needing to pick it back up again for the strap.

  10. Hdc 10 (black)

  11. Dc 10 (black) Do not finish off

At the end of the last round, pick the yellow back up, so that your working with both colours. Chain around 30 inches, do not f/o. Pull the last chain bigger, so that it will fit around the button you intend to use. Cut tail that's around 5-6 inches long. Pinching the bottom of the chain (to stop you from tightening it by accident, wrap the tail around your fingers (where your pinching the chain), then thread the tail through and carefully pull tight. Sew the tail into the chain. Turn the holder inside out (I used a larger crochet hook, and so of rolled it inside out. Tidy the inside tails, and turn back out the right way.Using some normal sewing thread and needle, sew a button on the outside of the holder, on the opposite side to the beginning of the strap.

Bumble bee wings

In white

Ch 5

(Hdc, Ch 1, Tr, Ch 1, Hdc) all in 4th chain from hook. Ch 2, s/s into last Ch Turn work so that your working on the other side of the starting chain. Ch 2 (Hdc, Ch 1, Tr, Ch 1, Hdc) 2nd chain, Ch 2 s/s into next chain. F/o leave a long enough tail for sewing.

Sew the wings to the holder, hide the tail.

Plain lighter holder

This is made in the same way as the striped, but without the colour changes. I've written it out again to save you scrolling.

Mr 5 1. 2Dc 5 (10) 2. BLO Hdc 10 3. Hdc 10 4. Hdc 10 5. Hdc 10 6. Hdc 10 7. Hdc 10 8. Hdc 10 9. Hdc 10

10. Hdc 10 (black) 11. Dc 10 (black) When joining the the last round, grab a 2nd strand of yarn, and ch 30 inches using the 2 strands of wool.

Make the loop of the lanyard the same was as you did for the striped cosy.

Hide all tails.

Sew the on the button, the same as the striped.

Flower

Ch 4 all in the 4th Ch from hook, 2Dtr, ch3, s/s, (ch3, 2Dtr, ch3,s/s)x3 or 4 times depending on whether you want 4 or 5 petals. To finish off, pull the s/s loop out bigger, remove your hook. Insert Your hook through the centre of the flower, and draw the slipknot through the centre. Cut a long enough tail to sew the flower to the holder, draw the tail through the loop of the slipknot. Sew to the lighter holder and hide the tail.

You may sell any thing you make using my patterns, but please do not copy and paste my distribute my written patterns, please just link them back to my blog.
