FREE flowertop hat pattern 3-6 months

Hello!

Welcome to my 3rd free pattern. I am very excited to share this with you.

If you've happened to have read my blogs, you'll know from my scratch mitts pattern, that I have a 2nd niece on the way in January.

Well; I was at my local market, in the my husbands most favourite shop (I think he hates the place, haberdasheries should really come with a husband waiting room!), anyway I stumbled upon some beautiful green and pink baby dk. The instant I saw it, the idea for this hat popped straight in my head. : )

So I whipped this pattern up. In actual fact, i slaved over it for 2 whole weeks, writing bits up, rubbing them out, undoing work, redoing work. I actually had 2 different patterns for the petals, but preferred the 2nd one as the have a bit more structure to them.

Enough of me waffling on, you came here for the pattern, right?

Your welcome to use my pattern for free, if you wish to share please link back to my site. If you like the pattern, as wish to show your support, I have it up for sale on my etsy as a pdf download for just £2.

If you need any help with this pattern, free to email me, which can be done via the contact us, or etsy.

I am also working on matching booties and scratch mitts; which may or may not be available when you download this pattern. (if it's not available please check back to my website, as they are the next patterns to be made up.)

What you will need

  • baby soft dk yarn in light green, light pink and a tiny amount of Dark green

  • 3.5mm hook

  • yarn needle

  • stitch markers

Notes

This pattern has been written in British terms; for those of you used to US terms, simply switch 'DC' to 'SC'.

This pattern is worked in rounds.

Each round is joined with a SS unless otherwise stated.

Always read the italics as these contain important pattern notes applicable to the next section of the pattern.

2DC = 2 DC in the same stitch

DC 2 = 1 DC in the next 2 stitches

(2DC)X6 = 2 DC in same stitch 6 times (so you have 2DC's in the 6 stitches, making 12 DC's total.)

(2DC, DC)x6 = 2DC in the same stitch, then 1 DC in the next stitch repeat 6 times (so you'll have 2DC and 1 DC 6 times making 18 stitches in total)

2TOG = 2 dc together, other writers sometimes use DEC or decrease.

numbers in brackets at the end of a round indicates how many stitches you should have in that round.

Gauge= for a 2 inch square, 10 st, 11 rows

Green leaves/ top of hat

Ch 1 at the beginning of every round, join each round with a ss into the ch1.

To get the same spiral effect as my hat, start each round with the 1st stitch in the same stitch as the ch 1, because of this, there will be 1 st left over in each round DO NOT add an extra stitch, ignore it and ss into the ch 1.

ch 1 also counts as a dc.

Example- (2DC)x6 = ch 1, dc into same stitch as ch 1 (this counts as the 1st 2DC). then 2DC in next 5 stitches.

Place a stitch marker into the ch 1

  1. MR 6 (6)

  2. (2DC)x6 (12)

  3. (2DC, DC)x6 (18)

  4. (2DC, DC 2) x6 (24)

  5. (2DC, DC 3 ) x6 (30)

  6. (2DC, DC 4)x6 (36)

  11. (2DC, DC 9)x6 (66)

  12. (2DC, DC 10)x6 (72)

  13. (2DC, DC 11)x6 (78)

  14. (2DC, DC 12)x6 (84)

  15. (2DC, DC 13)x6 (90)

  16. (2DC, DC 14)x6 (96)

From round 17, when you start each round, ch 1 as per usual, but put your next stitch into the next stitch (Rather then the same as the ch 1 in the previous rounds). So you will no longer have 1 spare stitch at the end of every round.

The ch 1 still counts as 1 stitch.

This will give the hat a straight seam down the back, but keeps the the spiral effect for on top.

17-26) DC 96 (96)

Next we move onto the green triangular leaves .(so forget the previous instructions in italics)

For this, we stop working in the round and start working straight, turning your work at the end of every round.

Each leaf is worked individually.

Ch1 counts as a DC.

27. Ch 1, DC 15 (16) dc into the next stitch, not the same as the ch!

28. Ch 1, DC 13 2TOG (15)

29. Ch 1, DC 12 2TOG (14)

30. Ch 1, DC 11 2TOG (13)

31. Ch 1, DC 10 2TOG (12)

32. Ch 1, DC 9 2TOG (11)

33. Ch 1, DC 8 2TOG (10)

34. Ch 1, DC 7 2TOG (9)

35. Ch 1, DC 6 2TOG (8)

36. Ch 1, DC 5 2TOG (7)

37. Ch 1, DC 4 2TOG (6)

38. Ch 1, DC 3 2TOG (5)

39. Ch 1, DC 2 2TOG (4)

40. Ch 1, DC, 2TOG (3)

41. Ch 4, DC in 4 chain from hook. f/o

Now go back to round 26, make sure you have a slip knot on your hook, and join onto the next stitch, after the previous end of round 27.

To join, make sure you have a slip knot on your hook. Insert your hook into the 1st stitch y/o, pull through the stitch and slip knot. Essentially a slip stitch.

Repeat round 27-43 6 times, so that you end up with 6 leaves.

Tie in your ends.

Pink petals

Make 6.

The petals are worked in continuous rounds; so need need to join with a SS, and no need to ch1. Make sure to place a stitch marker in the 1st stitch of each round; this will allow you to know where your current round ends and the next one begins.

1) Mr 6 (6)

2) (2DC)x6 (12)

3) (2DC, DC)x6 (18)

4) (2DC, DC 2)x6 (24)

5) (2DC, DC 3)x6 (30)

6-9) DC 30 (30)

10) (2DC, DC4)x6 (36)

11-12) DC 36 (36)

13) (2TOG, DC4)x6 (30)

14-30) DC 30 (30)

Press the petal flat , so that you hook is at the left end of the petal.

31)Ch 1 and turn, DC 14 through both front and back stitches. F/O, the 1st 5 petals, but not on the last (15)

Joining the pink petals/lining of the hat

Do not worry that the petals are flapping around whilst making this part. We DC them together once the 2 parts have been sewn together.

Make sure that your stitches on row 31 of each petal are facing the same way as the final petal that should still be attached to your hook.

Make sure to untwist your petals before starting work on the 6th petal. I was untwisting after each petal.

32) ch 2, then get the 2nd petal and DC 15, ch 1, grab the 3rd petal and DC 15. ch1, 4th petal DC 15, ch 1, 5th petal DC 15,ch 1,6th petal (this joins all of the petals) DC 15, ss into 1st ch of the round.

From round 33 ch 1 at the beginning of every round and join each round with a SS into the ch 1.Each ch 1 at beginning of round counts as a st. Place 1st stitch in the same stitch as the ch1, there will be 1 left over stitch at the end of every round. The same as we did for the top of the green hat.

33-35)DC 90 (90)

36) (DC 13, 2TOG)x6 (84)

37) (DC 12, 2TOG) x6 (78)

38) (DC 11, 2TOG)x6 (72)

39) (DC 10, 2TOG)x6 (66)

40) (DC 9, 2TOG)x6 (60)

41) (DC 8, 2TOG)x6 (54)

42) (DC 7, 2TOG0x6 (48)

43) (DC 6, 2TOG)x6 (42)

44) (DC 5, 2TOG)x6 (36)

45) (DC 4, 2TOG)x6 (30)

46) (DC 3, 2TOG)x6 (24)

47) (DC 2, 2TOG)x6 (18)

48) (DC, 2TOG)x6 (12)

49) 2TOG x6 (6)

50) F/O, leaving a long tail. Weave the tail in and out of the front loops of the last round, then pull tight, and tidy the tail. Turn right side out, so that the right side of the work is on the inside.

Dark Green leaf top

This is the last part be make as a separate piece; before sewing it all together and crocheting the petals together.

Make sure to leave tails long enough at both ends to enable you to sew them in nice and tidy later.

we start with the 1st leaf.

Where I have written htr, tr, dtr etc would be to htr , then tr in the next stitch, dtr in the next stitch etc

Ch14

1st leaf

  1. *DC in 2nd Ch from hook, then HTR, TR,DTR,TR,HTR,DC*

2nd leaf

  1. Ch 8 and repeat from *to*, SS into the last DC of the 1st leaf

3rd leaf

  1. Ch 8 and repeat from *to*

  2. DC into each chain down to the end. F/o

Use your hook to pull the shortest tail through the centre of the green top, and tidy.

Assembly

Next we need to assemble the hat. So put the petals inside the green top, and line them up so that each petal has a green triangle. As seen in the picture, I have used stitch markers to pin the lining to the top, but safety pins will work just as well.

When you look at the hat from the top, you should see a pretty spiral effect from the 2DC's each round. I have sewn along the spiral; because I think it looks nicer then straight lines. However this is your project; so feel free to play around with it. I have used a back stitch, as I feel it secures it better. If you look at my hat for reference, on the outside of the hat I've sewn it so that the dark green yarn goes over 1 row of stitches then under.

To do this, insert your needle from wrong side to right, pull yarn through, then insert your needle right side to wrong side, going 1 row up from where you started the stitch.

Insert your needle WS to RS 3 rows down. Then RS to WS 1 row up. Repeat the pattern. So each stitch on the right side of your work is sewn upwards, then the back stitch; where you sew in a downwards direction on the wrong side. You will notice that you get a solid line on the inside.

Do the same stitching around the green triangles.

The last thing to do, is to crochet the petals together.

For this I folded the hat flat so that the 2 petals I was stitching together were on top of each other with the 2 top edges matching up (green to the right of the work and petals to the left). Pin in place with stitch markers. Working on the outside of the hat.

DC through the edge of both petals, you want to DC right down one row further then the green triangles finish.

And, there you have it,

I hope you enjoyed this pattern, there will be many more to come.

Also keep an eye out for the matching booties and mittens, which will be my next project.
